Simile is a very common literary device. Simile is a comparison made between two things to bring out the qualities of something by referring to qualities of something else. A simile is usually used with “as” or “like”. Example:
1. die as cattle
(Anthem for Doomed Youth)
In this simile 1000s of dying soldiers are compared to cattle.
2. creeping like a snail
(The Seven Ages of Man)
The school boy is compared to a snail as he is unwilling to go to school.
3. Fair as a star
(She dwelt among the untrodden ways)
Here, Lucy is compared to a star.
