Poetry.....

Poems are the works of poets. A poem conveys experiences, ideas, emotions, thoughts in a vivid manner.

William Wordsworth defined poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings."
Robert Frost has said “poetry begins with delight and ends with wisdom”.

Poetry has its own form. Some of them are:
  • Blank verse (unrhymed verse)
  • Free verse (no regular rhyme or rhythm)
  • Sonnet form (a poem of 14 lines -having conventional rhyme scheme).
Thus, it is different from prose. Poets use carefully selected words (economy of language) which also add rhyme, rhythm and musical quality to the poem. The language used in the poems is distinctive. Poets apply various techniques to give their message, feelings and ideas through poetry.

Let us look at some poetic devices with examples taken from the poems in the textbook.
