Personification is giving human qualities or characteristics to animals, objects or abstract ideas. In other words lifeless things are given life.
Example:
1. death rattled the gate at five

'death' is treated as a person who rattled the gate.
2. down towards Glasgow she descends
(Night Mail)
The train is treated as a lady.
